Rewind to the start of the year. You’ve resolved to make a change — for some, it’s as simple as reading more books, and for others, it might be to get on the health bandwagon, maintain a better lifestyle, or lose weight. Fast forward to the present; you’re more active, have
committed to an exercise routine, and even revamped your diet, but the numbers on the scale show no change. That was my story too. After struggling with my weight for quite some time, I realized it was imperative to take action, and two years ago, I embarked on a journey to shed the kilos and rehaul my lifestyle.
At the time of my decision, I weighed an alarming 106.5 kg, and my BMI was around 42 which is considered to be much higher than the healthy range. Living alone and having a career as a food blogger certainly resulted in a lifestyle that contributed to me putting on weight. To put it simply, I was on the cusp of obesity, and my goal was to make the number staring back at me on the scale begin to decline. To kick off, I made changes to my diet and started exercising regularly. However, there was no significant change in terms of my weight loss goals, which of
course, set me back mentally. Getting past feelings of deflation, I realized this was not a journey I could go on alone, and I decided to seek professional help.
With this in mind, I was introduced to the Allurion Program, a 360-degree weight loss experience that is an alternative option to weight loss surgery.
I was very much on board with this plan, and after the initial consultation, I decided to enroll in the program. At its centre is the Allurion Balloon, the world’s first and only swallowable, procedure-less gastric balloon for weight loss, which I swallowed during my visit to Dr Bart. To my delight, it was a quick and simple process, and it marked the first step to ensuring proper balance in my food portions whilst also creating a feeling of fullness to keep the dreaded feeling of hunger at bay. The best part about this was that it trained me to eat only what my body needed to function properly, and thus, the balloon stayed in my stomach for a short time and passed naturally after around 16 weeks.
It doesn’t stop there. I also had frequent check-ins scheduled with Chirine to make sure I was on track with the set goals and was given guidance on proper nutrition. For the days we couldn’t meet in person, I benefited from remote monitoring through the Allurion Virtual Care Suite, which is the one-stop-shop for everything I needed post-balloon placement. It included the Allurion Connected Scale, a Health Tracker and an App, and most importantly, Allurion Insights, which is a portal that allows for end-to-end patient management. It enabled me to send and receive messages from my physician and telehealth, which helped me manage my healthcare. The balloon placement, coupled with these lifestyle modifications, led to clear results, which I now realise might not have been possible with just diet and exercise alone.
It was as much a physical as a mental journey. Not only did the weight loss pose great benefits to my body’s health (with obesity, we are more at risk of developing severe conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular issues including high blood pressure), but for my mind as well.
With Chirine’s help, I began to understand my body and its needs better. I felt lighter, slept better, and there was a change in my overall wellbeing.
Throughout my journey, I learned that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not a trend but an ongoing experience. People often say that the ideal way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more, but that is far from the truth. Looking back at the start, I understand that I made a lot of missteps. The first was thinking that I could use a quick fix solution to lose weight. Whilst I would have achieved my goals, I would not have been able to sustain them long-term. The fact is, no weight loss program is a magic bullet, and what I needed was to rehaul my lifestyle completely, using a holistic approach with guidance from a healthcare professional. Being on this journey has not only made a positive impact on my physical health but also my mental health. I feel a lot more confident in my own skin and it has really helped boost my self-esteem. I am a better and much healthier version of myself and we all deserve to feel that way!
