Costume Institute Gala or the Met Gala as it is well known is fashion’s biggest night. Celebrities, designers, and brands from all around the world descend on New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Every year there is a theme to the Met Gala, and we have listed down the year and the theme, so that you can enjoy the costumes from those years.
2017: “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the in-between”
- Blake Lively
Blake wore an Atelier Versace gold gown with a feather train in different shades of blue. The look was inspired by the beauty of birds and was a hit in that year’s Gala. Blake has been serving us with beautiful dresses year after year and she and her husband Ryan Reynolds is one of the co-chairs for this year’s Met Gala.
- Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra wore a Ralph Lauren trench coat-gown. Her detachable gown was one of the most iconic dresses of that year. 2017 was the year she walked down the red carpet with her now-husband Nick Jonas. They both wore Ralph Lauren and met for the first time during the Met Gala the same year.
2018- Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination
- Chadwick Boseman
Chadwick Boseman from the Black Panther movie wore a white Versace outfit including gold embellishments, gold-colored shoes, and a cape befitting a King. The use of gold on white is one of the most elegant ways to put forth the theme of the year.
Rihanna has been the reigning queen at the Met Gala. She has always brought her A-game to this event. Riri wore a jewel and pearl encrusted cape with matching headgear and necklace. She wore Cartier jewelry and Louboutin shoes to go with her outfit. The entire look was conceptualized by Margiela.
2019- “Camp: Notes on Fashion”
- Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga made a spectacular entrance at the 2019 Met Gala. She wore her close friend Brandon Maxwell’s gown. Her dress was in fuchsia pink with a 25-foot-long train and an oversized fuchsia pink hair bow. She had her performance inculcated into the red carpet by changing dresses (with each dress worn as a layer under the pink dress) till they entered the Museum.
- Kim Kardashian
Kim wore a latex beaded crystal gown with a cinched waist to resemble a wet look. The crystals were specially designed to look like water droplets. The design was to resemble a person drenched in water walking out of the ocean. The designer Thierry Mugler came out of retirement to design this memorable dress.
2021- “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”
- Timothée Chalamet
For the American fashion-inspired theme for 2021, Timothée wore Haider Ackermann’s all-white ensemble. The outfit’s most standout piece was the white sweatpants styled with the satin tuxedo jacket with broad black panel detail and Converse shoes.
- Kendall Jenner:
Kendall wore a sheer Givenchy Haute Couture gown for the 2021 Met Gala. Her gown was inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s iconic Givenchy gown from the film My Fair Lady. She was drenched in diamond and wore a diamond choker to go with her deep neck gown.
