How to create the viral ‘Pumpkin-Spice Makeup’ trend

Social media is currently crammed full of people eagerly anticipating fall, and the cosy evenings, flavoured hot drinks and Gilmore Girls Netflix repeats typically associated with the visually pleasing season.

With the drastic drop in temperatures experienced at this time of year,  naturally followed are the latest beauty trends that makeup lovers are choosing to compliment their autumnal knitwear pieces, woolly scarves and knee-high leather boots.

And the hottest trend of Fall 2023 so far? Pumpkin Spice Makeup.

That’s right, no longer just a heavily spiced hot beverage popular amongst hardcore Starbucks fans, Pumpkin Spice now boasts a striking makeup look all of its own.

With Google searches for “Pumpkin Spice Makeup” up 81% in the past 30 days, and TikTok views for the hashtag #pumpkinspicemakeup boasting more than 4.3 million views and counting, it seems as though the look is set to dominate over the coming few months as we head towards the end of the year.

So, what exactly does the Pumpkin Spice Makeup trend consist of, and how does one create the autumnal trend at home to ensure their make-up perfectly compliments the colour palettes and aesthetic of the fall season?

Below, Nick Drewe, trend expert at online platform Wethrift provides insight into the viral trend:

During the summer and its accompanying hot weather, many opt to tone down on their use of heavy make-up looks and bolder colour palettes in order to embrace their naturally sunkissed tans, freckles, and to stay as refreshed and bare-faced as possible.

“Now that a new season is upon us, the Pumpkin Spice Makeup trend is perfect for those looking to switch up their seasonal look as they dig out their favourite cosy outfits and statement pieces, and plan ahead for the crisp drop in temperature.

This trend is reminiscent of a darker, fall-friendly monochromatic style that gives a more seasonal, heavy twist on the popular lighter summer looks of ‘Latte Makeup’ and ‘Strawberry-Girl Makeup’. The monochromatic influence indicates that tones used for eyeshadow and eyeliner will perfectly match your bronzer and highlighter, as well as your lip colour of choice.

It’s hardly surprising that the dominating colours associated with the Pumpkin Spice Makeup trend are burnt oranges, browns and bronzes. These colours work perfectly at this time of year in order to mimic the shades found in our favourite hot beverages, cinnamon spices, pumpkins, and the falling amber leaves scattered across the ground.

“Exactly how bold you’d like to go with regards to the shades of oranges used for eye and lip colour is a matter of personal preference when it comes to how literally you take the ‘pumpkin’ reference. For those who are more inclined to embrace earthier tones than risk a full-blown orange, try pairing a clear lip gloss with a brown lip liner in order to create a subtle autumn vibe.

“One of the easiest DIY hacks to ensure you recreate the Pumpkin Spice Makeup look at home, is to double up your bronzer as your eyeshadow to add a new level of autumnal warmth and depth to your eyes, whilst also matching it to the tone of your cheekbones.

“Finally, in order to keep in tune with the aforementioned colour palettes, try swapping your black eyeliners and mascara for more subtle and seasonal brown items to keep the focus on your cheek and lip colours. Only apply the brown eyeliner to the outer corners of your eyes rather than the entire lid in order to give your eyes a softer look that can be blended with your brown or orange eyeshadow to create a level of autumnal smokey eye that you’re happy with.”
