Siren Eyes Crowned as the Biggest Beauty Trend of the Year

The study was conducted as part of the Micro-Trends Culture: Mapped report by online platform, Wethrift. The Wethrift trends team crunched the numbers, and analysed online data to rank which beauty trends are dominating the landscape this year.

If you use TikTok, you are likely familiar with how there seems to be a new skincare or beauty trending popping up every week. But have you wondered which are just a short-lived fad, and which are actually taking the world by storm, and are worth trying out as part of your own regime?  After taking a seed list of the most popular online beauty trends, and analysing various data points, the study has revealed that ‘Siren Eyes’ is the most prolific of this year’s online beauty trends, receiving a total score of 28.6 out of a potential 40. Insight on the top beauty trends of 2023 can be found below: 

  1. Siren Eyes – 28.6/40

 As the name suggests, this beauty trend draws inspiration from the Greek mythological creature, The Siren, a creature that lures sailors in with enchanting music. The makeup trend is all about creating a sultry, alluring effect with eyeliner to elongate the eye. It is about creating a dramatic and lifted look, whilst adding a sultry and seductive element to it, designed to accentuate the eye, and create an elongating effect to create the sultry look and feel.  One of the real benefits of this trend is that it can be achieved using minimal products, mainly eye liner, eye shadow, and mascara to complete the look, combining the core elements of a classic cat eye look, and a smokey eye. The #sireneyes TikTok hashtag has surpassed a staggering 1.2 billion views so far.

  1. Skin Cycling – 28.5/40

 Skin Cycling exploded onto the TikTok skincare section in 2023 and is the term used to describe the process of alternating between skincare products that use active ingredients on certain days as part of your skincare routine.  People who take part in a skin cycle will most often do a 4 day cycle, undertaking two days of applying active skincare ingredients, followed by giving their skin two days of rest – and repeating the cycle going forward.  The TikTok hashtag #skincycling has received a staggering 451 million views and counting. During the time of the study, Google Trends data showed a 1,200% increase in Google searches year-on-year.

  1. Glazed Donut Nails – 27.9/40

 ‘Glazed donut nails’ refers to nude nails with a pearlescent finish. Sported by celebrities such as Hayley Bieber, which sent the internet into overdrive with glazed donut nail fever last year, the nail craze has grown exponentially this year, with 45.4 million views on the #glazeddonutnails TikTok hashtag. This nail trend is growing in popularity due to the minimalist, chic nature of the pearlescent colour. As we enter a new era of sustainable fashion and beauty, minimalism seems to be at the core of the latest beauty trends, which will explain why these nails are gaining traction.  “The summer season is known for weddings and celebrations alike, so it comes at no surprise that this nail shade is making its way around the beauty industry. The simple, yet glamorous essence of the manicure, makes it a crowd pleaser for those who may have elegant summer day parties to attend.

  1. Coquette Aesthetic – 27.8/40

 One of the biggest beauty trends of the year, the ‘coquette aesthetic’ is used to describe a hyper-feminine style of makeup. The makeup trend is all about blending feminine and dainty attributes with a sultry and seductive edge to it.  Think bright, blushed cheeks, bright lipstick, elongated eyeliner and long, fluttery lashes. The beauty trend also involves adding dainty finishes and decorative elements to both the makeup and nail art, such as pearlescent finishes, bows, and decorating with a touch of lace.  TikTok has been a significant driver of this trend, with views on the hashtag #coquetteaesthetic surpassing 2.4 billion views, and also gathering plenty of attention on photo sharing apps such as Pinterest and Instagram.
