Stand-Out Style Elements by 21st Century’s OTT Shows

TV shows and Movies have time and again given us some iconic characters that made their presence on screen so memorable with their performances. And if that wasn’t enough for the audience, the majority creative lot of us get so attracted to the style nuances of certain characters. Be it Cher’s closet from ‘Clueless,’ Carrie Bradshaw’s shoe collection from ‘Sex and the City,’ Blair Waldorf’s hairbands or Serena’s ‘Boots for any season’ from ‘Gossip Girl,’ we’ve sure wanted to dress like one of these characters or even envied them. Incidentally, all the above-mentioned icons have inspired some of our dressing habits that were predominantly meant for the same. Fashion was a big part of the persona they created and rarely was it that fictional Male characters rose to the occasion of having themselves be known for their style or dressing. It’s only the present “style hungry” gen digging into cult classic shows/movies and picking certain elements of style, giving it their 21st-century kick.

While the reimagining and reemergence continues, we’ve come to a time where a character, component, or even a phrase in our modern-day binging of Online platform shows has become a style statement without the intention of it being so. With Tiktok, how fast some of these end up trending is n times higher. Some characters have had the most subtle while others have very in-your-face elements, each just as important in the story-telling of a character’s arc as the other.

An avid viewer of the light-hearted show that ‘Schitt’s Creek’ would have very early familiarized themselves with David’s (Dan Levy) aesthetic on the show: all about thick, cozy sweaters and a classic black, white, and the occasional grey color palette managing to always make an entrance in the chicest and boldest outfits, clearly inspired by his mother, the one and only- Moira Rose (Catherine O’Hara).

What played of extreme importance, however, were David’s rings which until season 5 (no spoilers) were paid attention to by very few who observed the minutest of details. Prior to that episode of the season, one didn’t think of any significance as to why David wore at least 4 rights on either hand. While there is no certain idea of why it is so, viewers argue the permutation and combination as to how David wore his rings represent his emotions set for the day, while others presume it is his subconscious attempt to emulate his mother’s style.

While ‘sweet turned obsessive’ Cassie had been copying Maddy’s dressing style to capture Nate’s split-second attention, the internet already blew up with everyone wanting to recreate the exact diamante studded nude base nails Cassie wore in the premiere episode of season 2. While not everyone wants to be a Cassie (at least not the season 2 Cassie), this effortless party-classy look manages to grab eyes with its bling.

A show garnering attention from the time it first aired, it had already created a style frenzy with its Iconic three-piece suits and baker boy caps. But that just wasn’t it alone. A significant takeaway for many viewers was Cillian Murphy’s character- David Shelby’s military-inspired haircut complimenting his polished look in the crime drama. Where once it was hard to convince the actors to chop off their hair for the part, we’ve come to a time where you’ll see every 3rd person you pass on the street sporting the same fade cuts and undercuts so effortlessly. Save to say, he’s our 21st Century Rachel Green.

If you have seen Schitt’s Creek, you very well know that if Moira had to choose between saving her kids or Wigs from a fire, she’d be more inclined towards saving her darling babies- her wigs (she’ll save her kid, maybe). When it comes to her wigs, this ‘Monochromatic-outfit’ queen is just so dramatic that you can almost tell she used to be an actress even if you didn’t know of her. Moira has a wig for every mood, which she has also named and makes sure to wear to depict her emotions, showing the layers of her eccentric personality. It’s no surprise David takes after his mother.

Falon Carrington’s Power Suits and Dresses- Dynasty

A show so popular in the 1980s, the remade version is just so much more juicer with its never-ending drama, family members deceiving each other, and a hotter cast. Where the 80’s version changed the way the female characters dressed with a touch of masculinity in their clothing- giving birth to Power-suits for women, it got a major upgrade in the new version with Fallon Carrington taking away the credit by a considerable margin. A fierce character, Fallon never fails to make the audience fall in love with her bold nature and, adding to this boldness- her outfits. The revival of power suits and dresses for her character is almost always a vibrant shade complemented perfectly with a classic sultry red lip and gorgeous left-open hair. Her version of Power-dressing is the answer to the prayers of the hustling and always slaying lady of today.

Anyone you ask who’s watched the show, they’ll tell you how the real plot for them was- Cookie’s outfits. Lyon is flamboyantly dressed for almost any occasion, big or small. Her style is the lovechild of street-style and runway fashion in the most charming way, just like her. Animal prints have long existed and reappear and disappear every now and then. Cookie’s attempt at anything top to bottom animal print is somehow never too ‘in your face’ and makes one believe they can pull it off as effortlessly as she does every single time. Her style screams’ Fun Boss Lady.’
