The most anticipated red carpet of the year, the Met Gala may be over, but the buzz around this year’s beauty looks is just getting started. Last year bleached brows were the hottest trend on the carpet, this year we’re seeing soft glam, red lips and the return of hair bows.
The Met Gala is one of the most prestigious events of the year and sets many trends for the remainder of the year and beyond. This year’s theme was ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ which paid tribute to the Creative Director of Chanel following his death in 2019.
So how does that translate into beauty? Nick Drewe, Beauty Trends expert at Wethrift has shared insight into the hottest trends of the event and how these are likely to influence consumer beauty for summer 2023 and beyond.
The takeover of soft glam
Soft glam is one of 2023’s biggest beauty trends and the Met Gala red carpet proves it. The trend is all about looking glamorous without heavy makeup and is a step above the no-makeup look. Think natural-looking makeup, with sunkissed glowy skin, diffused eyes and naked lashes, without strong contour, heavy cut-crease shadows and overpowering eyelashes.
Penelope Cruz, Jennie Kim and Sydney Sweeney are just a few of the A-list celebrities who were seen sporting the soft glam look on the red carpet. As we head towards the warmer months of the year, we’re likely to see more natural-looking makeup inspired by the Met Gala.
Rocking a rouge lip
While not a new trend – a classic red lip has been one of the most dominating beauty looks of the 2023 Met Gala. Rihanna set the tone by wearing a bold red lip, frosted eyeshadow and a bold and vibrant blush – perfect for the occasion.
Lily Collins wore a beautiful Vera Wang gown, with a centre slit on the skirt, complete with ‘Karl’ written on the train. However, it was the actor’s make-up look that really stole the show. Lily wore a scarlet lip, inspired by French supermodel Inès de la Fressange.
Sophisticated smokey eyes
A common theme on the Met Gala red carpet was the classic smokey eye. From Emily Ratajkowski to Kim Kardashian and Florence Pugh, celebrities recreated fiercely smokey looks, incorporating dark shades and bronze tones.
The smokey eye is a staple red carpet look, but we’re likely to see it have an influence over summer beauty trends, with more people embracing natural and lighter tones.
Hair bows were a hot hit
Hair bows dominated the Met Gala red carpet event. Emily Ratajkowski, Nicole Kidman, Sydney Sweeney, Karlie Kloss and Billie Eilish are just a few of the attendees that sported the return of the classic hair accessory, which gives major glam vibes.
As we enter into summer, hair bows are going to be huge. On Pinterest, demand has crept up massively with searches up by 90%. While over on the video streaming platform, TikTok, the hashtag, #hairbow has amassed a colossal 207.5 million views.
Seasonal statement blush
Heavy blush has been a statement beauty trend for spring and summer 2023. This year, the Met Gala celebrities have really embraced the trend, with the likes of Lizzo, Priyanka Chopra and Ashley Graham wearing bold blush, in soft pink shades.
Statement blush will continue to be a growing trend for the remainder of the year, especially as more people embrace a soft-glam and natural makeup look.
It wouldn’t be the Met Gala without some sparkle, and Gigi Hadid has incorporated shimmer into her makeup look. Celebrity makeup artist, Patrick Ta, created the frosted eyeshadow look and even played homage to Karl Lagerfeld by adding pearls under the eye.
Again, we are seeing soft glam take over. Frosted lids are a step in the opposite direction to the heavy, overstated glitter eyeshadow that we have previously seen on the red carpet. This look will influence consumer beauty trends for the upcoming months, as individuals opt for a sophisticated and statement natural look for prom, festivals and the holiday season.
