For his latest collaboration with New Balance, Todd Snyder created a limited-edition sneaker that takes its inspiration from New York City’s greenmarkets. Based on the NB 327, the Farmers Market edition comes in three colorways—Wheat, Pineapple and Pomegranate—each featuring a unique icon on the tongue that corresponds to the matching food group: Grains, Fruits and Vegetables. The sneaker’s design juxtaposes the vibrant colors of a farm stand with the buzz of city life.
“We concepted the Farmers Market capsule during lock-down. So the design team and I were reminiscing about (and looking forward to) the experience of walking around a farmers market on a hot summer day,” says Snyder. “We wanted these sneakers to be a colorful reminder of how special that experience is. I’m grateful that this capsule is coming out at a moment when many of us can return to our local farm stands and favorite restaurants.” To continue the theme, the collection was shot on three of Todd’s favorite New York culinary figures: Dan Kluger, James Beard Award-winning chef/owner of Loring Place; Christina Tosi, James Beard Award-winning chef/owner of Milk Bar; and Bon Appetit senior food editor Andy Baraghani.
The NB 327 is a modern mash-up of several 1970s NB running shoes (the 320, 355 and Supercomp styles), and the style started having a moment at the beginning of 2020 after it was adopted by several European street style brands. For the Farmers Market Capsule the sneakers feature suede over mesh exteriors. The mesh gives the sneakers an easy-breezy summer feel, while the suede gently echoes the materials one might find in a gentleman’s dress shoe. Enhancing the fun summer vibe is a split color
scheme on each of the 327s: Colors are literally inverted on the left and right sides of the sneaker. The Wheat edition comes in an olive and tan color story. The Pineapple is a blue and orange color mash-up, while The Pomegranate is orange and red.
