7 Beauty Trends Set to Dominate 2024

It’s the season of comebacks; unsurprisingly.

Makeup and fashion trends have a unique quality of tagging along classics and improvised versions of trends that once ruled runways and streets. This year is no different; 2024 sees an uprising of once-popular makeup and beauty styles, perhaps with a twist, or in most cases, a different name.

Experts anticipate a union of sorts in trending looks for the next year; an amalgamation of elements converging into more put-together, polished, and clean finishes without too many bold moving parts. Moreover, the “highlighter” and other products attributable to that healthy “glow from within” look are all making a comeback.

Without further ado, here are 7 exciting beauty trends set to take center stage in 2024.

All red everything

If 2023 was the year of all pink everything, thanks to “Barbiecore”, this season it’s all about taking bolder strides with red. Spring 2024 will likely see a fun and easy take with red nails and lips, perhaps attached with extra embellishments and added edge. As for lips, the Spring 2024 runway shows predominantly emphasized a dripping hot look inspired by a version of the 1960s swan. Touted as the “revenge lip”, it is the opposite of a bold matte lip – a smoldering red lip glazed in high-shine gloss. Red eyeliners will also likely go mainstream for Spring, leaving room for another fruit-inspired makeup look this year.

My skin but better

At one point in time, Instagram creators used to dip their faces in high-coverage foundations, leading to widespread differences of opinions, to put it subtly. Then came the era of the Korean-inspired glass skin, where people realized the importance of letting the skin have its own moment even with a full face of makeup. This year, we are embracing the best of both worlds.

Thanks to brands like Fenty Beauty and Covergirl, we have brand-new formulations of the much-loved skin tint. Enthusiasts are loving the idea of sufficient coverage complemented by the lightweight texture and dewy finish of the tints released by these brands. Some of the newest ones fuse skincare benefits along; they serve the purpose of a moisturizer that makes the skin look more even-toned and smooth. The shades, thankfully are wide in range; a lesson learned there.

Blush like a doll

Our obsession with the blush is likely in for the long haul. This year though, after having witnessed blush placement techniques throughout pretty much every high point of the face, we are going back to the apples of the cheeks. With interesting shades that bring about a sculpting effect, the “doll blush” look is meant to add more fullness and life to the cheeks, rendering a youthful glow. To avoid the risk of looking like a clown, the trick is to blend out the edges and create a softer transition. Makeup gurus like Patrick Ta recommend using a light hand and blending in some concealer if the blush is heavily pigmented.

Monochrome magic

Throughout every TikTok makeup trend that emerged in 2023, including the Latte makeup, the Strawberry girl makeup, and the Pumpkin Spice look, there was one common aspect – a monochromatic color palette. What was once called a bronze look, or a fresh face look basically reemerged under new names, but we have no complaints; the classics always make strong comebacks. 2024 will likely see more put-together and clean monochromatic looks, throwing a surge in the market for multi-use makeup products, much like the E.l.f monochromatic multi-stick from years ago. Supermodels like Hailey Baldwin who popularized the strawberry girl look, are setting the stage for more inspired makeup looks this year too.

Bright and natural lashes

Feathery brows, soapy brows, bleached brows, arched and glitter brows; safe to say, the brows have had their fair share of dramatic transitions over the past few seasons. This time, we are keeping the brows minimal with a long-overdue emphasis on the lashes. The Spring runway shows including the likes of Prada, and AZ Factory had models donning brightly colored lashes; think electric blues, purples, and neon pink. This year, the trend is likely to amplify with brands like YSL and Half Magic (unsurprisingly) set to launch ultra-dramatic mascaras in blue, green, purple, and metallic hues. Falsies are likely to take a step back, and for good reason. We are apparently, maintaining the originality of everything this year.

AI-inspired highlights

Highlighters, after having taken a break over the previous few seasons, have come back, and how! Adding to the au natural trend, cream highlighters with subtle shimmer or sheen elements are perhaps the most favorite, along with fine powder products. It adds to the effortless healthy and dewy look that everyone has been loving since 2022. As far as the placement, thanks to the AI renditions of popular apps that came out in 2022, we will be seeing more of a center-focused highlight emphasizing the high points of the nose contour. This means everyone’s going to get a Roman nose this season, with a popping highlight down the bridge and a dot at the tip.

Cherry Cola lips all the way

An interesting fleeting fad that we saw in 2023 – the Cherry Cola lips, appears to be taking its time now. To put it in a more sophisticated way, as Cherry Cola is more of TikTok speak, it is the once-famous ombre lips, with a darker outer gradient and a lighter inner color. The combination gives the lips a fuller look while maintaining a vintage bold grace. Top it with a high-shine gloss or lip oil and we’ve got a new-gen edge added to the look. More experimental versions of the ombre trend are also being tested, such as red and pink, brown and nude, etc.

Interestingly enough, all of these trends are derived from or draw inspiration from several classic makeup elements. It shows the power of evergreen minimalism; people never get over elegant old-school solid makeup. And we cannot be gladder.
